Congratulations to the BPL Word Up! Winners

Last Sunday, April 10, the Birmingham Public Library hosted its annual Word Up! spoken word competition, and we at newsprung want to congratulate the 2016 winners!

First place went to Ellen Camp, who attends  Alabama School of the Fine Arts. Jeralyn Langford of Clay-Chalkville High School came in second, and Homewood High School’s Ellis Goldstein placed third.

According to the BPL press release on the winning poets:

The slam is sponsored by the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) and Real Life Poets, a nonprofit creative writing organization based in Birmingham. Ten students in grades 9 through 12 performed an original work of poetry inspired by the theme “Speak Out!” [ . . . ] Each participating high school held a preliminary contest, and the winners from each school competed in the WORD UP! competition.
